Module 7

MODULE 7:

Healthy Confidence and Self Belief

Upon completion of SHINE Module 7, we expect that our students:

  • Feel more empowered to face life with courage, no matter what circumstances come our way; having the courage to walk through the door of opportunity when it presents itself
  • Understand the difference between humility and arrogance
  • Can convey the body language of someone who believes in themselves (aka. Self-confidence, self-assuredness, humility with a sprinkle of spunk)
  • Understand that anxiety is a normal and necessary human emotion that helps us avoid dangerous situations or heightens our ability to face them. Occasionally, anxiety can reach a level which interferes with an individual’s ability to function effectively and so reduces their quality of life
  • Are aware that shyness is a coping mechanism that has been developed to protect them
  • Have learnt to be kind to self, armed with the knowledge that 30% – 50% of us are born sensitive
  • Have become aware of the bodily sensations involved in anxiety and have developed skills to deal with these sensations and act courageously despite them
  • Have role-played myriad social situations that previously caused anxiety but feel confident to go forth and experience them in the future having learnt multiple coping strategies (a process of de-sensitisation)
  • This module gently challenges girls to push their boundaries; opening up their range of social situations in which they feel confident to engage with others and enjoy the occasion.

Module 6

MODULE 6:

How to make public speaking look easy

Upon completion of SHINE Module 6, we expect that our students:

  • Can constructively critique others on these twelve rules
  • Can give an impromptu speech without padding words (dysfluencies) or distracting body language
  • Can appropriately modulate their voice with awareness of location-specific acoustics and appropriate use of audio equipment
  • Can address many of the speech inadequacies we hear across society including: poor pronunciation of basic words, omitting or importing wrong consonants, perpetual and annoying use of “um” and “ah”, lazy articulation of t, d and k
  • Understand the importance of speaking in a chest voice, rather than a passive and inaudible head voice
  • Aim for excellence in enunciation at all times
  • Understand the life-long value of being a compelling communicator
  • Understand the self-limiting beliefs that surround the common fear of public speaking
  • Recognise that facing fears of public speaking is best handled with desensitisation training which involves exposing yourself and your amygdala to the thing you are afraid of over and over again, and in manageable doses. Introverts, in particular, find public speaking challenging, but soon recognise the long-term benefit of conquering such a fear.
  • Know how to open and close a conversation leaving the other person feeling enthralled, engaged and heard

Module 5

MODULE 5:

Assertive Communication

Upon completion of SHINE Module 5, we expect that our students:

  • Understand that research shows that, like sheep, people tend to run with the flock – if it is cool to bully, it will continue; if it is not cool to bully, then it will not. The peer group decides what is acceptable and what is not. Our students realise the responsibility they have to encourage their peer group to realise that it is not cool to bully
  • Understand, recognise and master the difference between passive, passive-aggressive, aggressive and assertive communication styles
  • Can set boundaries in relationships and can communicate appropriately about having their needs met
  • Can kindly and courageously say “no”, discuss an issue effectively and calmly, and communicate with others of different personalities and seniority levels without anxiety or fear
  • Can give friendly, constructive feedback and can accept constructive feedback with grace and dignity. Our students are taught to be impeccable with the truth; to be honest in the most gentle way
  • Can distinguish between constructive criticism and nasty criticism; knowing when to graciously accept criticism at face value (and assume positive intent) or assertively deflect the unhelpful kind
  • Can, in myriad role-playing social situations, assert themselves with confidence delivering a win-win result, including – dealing with intimidation, dealing with exclusion, recognising the friends who respect me and care for me and how to consciously and actively choose to be with them rather than be attached to the bully and their group/posse through fear
  • Can recognise when they are being manipulated and/or taken advantage of
  • Can recognise narcissists and those who do not have a genuine interest in their needs
  • Have a tool box full of skills they can take into the world to be assertive and simultaneously meet their needs with another in a harmonious interaction

  • Can stand up for myself respectfully and calmly
  • Can speak with authority and conviction whilst maintaining humble and relatable macro expressions.
  • Has mastered how to avoid the “rising inflection” which can leave an audience doubting that you believe what you are saying.

Counselling Session

Attended by: Individuals, couples or families (individuals must be a current/past student OR over the age of 18).

Brief summary:

For too long, the narrative around counselling has been that you only see a counsellor if there is something wrong.

Proactively, we see a mechanic for our car service, a dentist for our teeth, a doctor for our body, an accountant for our taxes, and we all need to be part of the societal shift towards seeing a mentor/coach/therapist/counsellor for our mind. This is just common-sense.

I maintain a safe, open, non-judgemental environment. A counselling session can be fun, you might laugh and you may cry, you may gain different perspectives and also new skills and strategies for relationships and life. And, most of all, I hope, you will find a few more of the jigsaw pieces in the puzzle known as life.

Sessions are tailored to your needs.

The session can be fast-moving or gentle; I can be frank, candid and sort problems quickly, or we can take our time and explore issues slowly. You set the tone. You are in the driver’s seat.

Our key aim is for society to view counselling as a sign of strength and an investment in wellbeing. I look forward to seeing you soon!

Melissa is a registered ACA Level 4 Counsellor, has a Masters in Counselling and has run a counselling practice since 2008.

Melissa’s key focus areas are relationship counselling (including marriage and couples therapy and how to deal with a break up), in-law challenges and parental alienation.

Private Health Insurance: you can claim sessions with Melissa if you have –

  1. MEDIBANK private health insurance bonus package with ancillaries and were a member prior to 1 May, 2011 or

Teenager and Young Adult Masterclass: 12 – 16 years

General Summary
The 12 – 16-year-old Teenager and Young Adult program is a 32-week leadership program with a rigorous focus on the challenges of being a teenager and young adult in our competitive (and sometimes cruel) world.

The eight SHINE Modules present key life skills including the development of EQ (emotional intelligence), SQ (social intelligence) and AQ (adaptability/adversity intelligence). Our focal topics include sociology, positive and negative ways to deal with emotional pain, how to deal with anger, leadership (poor and excellent examples) across the world, forensic psychology, what healthy relationships look and feel like, dating in the future, alcohol, drugs, résumé/folio enhancement, building your reputation, application of common-sense, how to be diplomatic during conflict, good decision-making, entrepreneurship, withstanding peer pressure, and so much more.

We cover 1040 concepts in the 32 weeks.

The philosophy underpinning the Teenager and Young Adult program is to challenge each individual to proactively consider subjects and perspectives outside their (traditional) frame of reference and comfort zone so that they are empowered and ready to handle the kind of scenarios and challenges likely (and some unlikely, but best to be prepared) to occur as a teenager and young adult.
